About

Dental Implants

Implants are titanium screws, placed into the jaw bone to directly replace a missing tooth or teeth.

You can have just one tooth replaced with an implant, or a complete set of teeth, as long as the bone they are placed into is strong and healthy.

When you come to London Road Dental Practice, Chippenham for dental implants the dentist will initially carry out tests on the jaw bone to assess if it is healthy enough for implant placement.

Once the implant has been placed into the bone, it is left for about three months to fully heal and integrate with the bone before a new tooth/teeth is fitted into the implant.

Your new implants will look and behave just like natural teeth. In fact, they are usually more firmly anchored to the bone than your natural teeth are, and you will find they are certainly easier to eat with compared to dentures.

Your

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Am I suitable for dental implants?

If you are in good general health, dental implants will almost certainly work for you. However, habits such as heavy drinking and smoking can increase the number of problems associated with the initial healing and the long-term maintenance of dental implants. Those who suffer from diabetes or are on osteoporosis medication will also require further discussions with the dentist.

2. How many implants will I need?

The number of implants required will vary according to the size and position of the space to be restored. Each case is different and your dentist will be able to advise on the best solution for your individual needs.

3. Is this treatment uncomfortable?

As the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, you won’t feel any pain during the placement of the implant. However, there will be some localised pain and swelling for a few days after your treatment. In most cases, standard painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen easily keeps the discomfort under control.

4. How long will the procedure take?

The procedure may take from 30 minutes for a simple single implant to a couple of hours for several implants.

5. I would like to have implants but feel nervous about the procedure, what can you do to help?

The implant procedure is generally performed under a local anaesthetic with you being fully alert. However, it can also be carried out with sedation for those who wish to feel more relaxed during the treatment.

6. How successful are dental implants?

Dental implants have a success rate of over 95%.

With a correct maintenance plan, implants can often remain in place for the rest of your life. In the rare occasion that an implant fails to integrate with your bone, a further attempt can be carried out provided there is sufficient bone remaining.

7. How do I look after my implants?

A strict oral hygiene regime at home is required in addition to regular visits to the dental hygienist.
