London Road Dental are cosmetic dentistry professionals based in Chippenham – serving the town and surrounding area. They are specialists in dental implants – a cost-effective and popularly preferred alternative to dental treatment with crowns and bridges, or the wearing of dentures.
Implants are titanium screws, placed into the jawbone (just like the root of a natural tooth) to support false teeth (called a crown or restoration).
The result is a natural-looking tooth which has none of the discomfort or inconvenience associated with the wearing of removable dentures.
You can have just one tooth replaced with an implant, or a complete set of restorations, as long as the bone they are placed into is strong and healthy.
Surgical implants can usually only be placed around three to six months after teeth have been extracted. Your dentist will be able to advise on how long after extractions you will have to wait for implants.
When you come to London Road Dental practice for dental implants the dentist will initially carry out tests on the jaw bone to discover if it is healthy enough for implant placement. Bone grafting (synthetic or animal bone) can be done if necessary at the same time as the implants.
The implant procedure is generally performed under a local anaesthetic – with sedation for those who prefer – and is no more painful than an extraction. Tenderness and discomfort for a few days following the surgery can be relieved with painkillers.
The false teeth (crown, bridge or denture) are usually fitted a few months after the implants have been placed, to allow the bone in the jaw time to fuse with the titanium screws. Each case is different, however, and your dentist will be able to advise you on the timescale before embarking on the treatment.
While the implants are settling in you can wear temporary dentures – full or partial – if you wish, though it is best not to do so for the initial week or so after the surgery to allow for healing to take place.
Dental implants can last for many years if well cared for, just like natural teeth.
Keep your regular maintenance appointments at the dentist, clean your teeth (just like your natural teeth) and visit the oral hygienist fairly frequently. If you neglect your implants there is the danger of gum disease, infection and toothache just as can happen with natural teeth.
Your new implants will look and behave just like natural teeth – in fact they are usually more firmly anchored to the bone than your natural teeth were, and you will find they are certainly easier to eat with than dentures, which often move about.
If your implanted teeth become damaged, they can usually be removed by a dentist and replaced with new ones. Damage to the titanium screws themselves, in the event of an accident for example, could be more complicated, but if sufficient bone is available new screws could be inserted alongside the damaged ones to repair the problem.
Dental implants may cost slightly more than conventional dental treatment for replacing missing teeth, but the many benefits of implants make them a cost effective alternative for most patients. After all, a healthy mouth and a confident smile are priceless assets!
